Erie can farm wind alone

(A letter to the editor published in the Erie Times News)

As a proponent of wind energy, I was delighted to see a piece on WJET-TV about wind energy off the shores of Erie. My delight quickly changed to disappointment as I heard Jake Rouch, the vice president of economic development for the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, state that he wanted to form a partnership with Pittsburgh and Ohio to develop wind farms on the lake.

Erie has already lost the remainder of our Steris employees to Ohio so why partner with them? Cleveland has said they want to be the first with wind energy on the Great Lakes because whoever is first will own the industry. Pittsburgh has little relationship with Lake Erie except for the tourists who arrive here on weekends.

My disappointment changed to dismay as WJET-TV made no mention of the excellent work done by state Rep. John Hornaman, of Millcreek Township, D-3rd Dist. Hornaman has worked for the past year with interested developers, the shipping industry, environmentalists and all other stakeholders to develop legislation that would enable Pennsylvania to lease the land under the lake to developers.

This legislation passed out of the State Government Committee without opposition and should go for a vote before the full house around the end of May.

This is the first step in a process that I hope will see Erie become the home of the wind industry on the Great Lakes with its many job opportunities.
